Mobile Devices (UNI-Mobile Global Cellular Service)

Usage and Benefits

Mobile operating systems, especially Android, vary by option names and menu structure between manufacturers and version releases. We listed several common setting names and menu paths to guide you through activating and usage of your UNI-Mobile service. However, if our suggestions do not apply to your device, you will need to find similar options and it is best to do so by using the settings search feature.

Usage and Benefits

UNI-Mobile, our unified mobile communication service, offers your users unlimited global wireless voice, text, and data plans that connect directly with their existing Telebroad phone lines and numbers, for a complete integration of business VoIP and wireless communication.

The cross-border service works seamlessly across multiple countries with a set price and a single subscription model, making it ideal for business travelers and companies with an international presence.

The service is configured in the Admin Center and users can add it to their mobile devices with either a physical SIM or an eSIM.

International Coverage

The service is available internationally in selected countries with the base plan covering the United States. Outside the US, you would just need to activate a roaming travel pass for an additional $10 per month (see Admin Center configuration next about adding roaming.)

Currently the travel pass works in Europe and North America. More countries and territories will be added in the future.

Click Checkout to create the subscription.

eSIM QR Code, ICCID Number, and Exchanging Your SIM

On the subscription summary screen, you can see the SIM's ICCID number  – a unique serial number that identifies the SIM card.

If you selected to use an eSIM, you will also see the eSIM status. Initially the status will appear as AVAILABLE, meaning the eSIM has been assigned to the subscription. Shortly afterward, the status will change to RELEASED, meaning the eSIM is ready to use. You can now click Show QR code to display the QR installation and activation code. Scan the code with the mobile phone of the relevant user to install the eSIM. You can also click to download the code and share it with the user later. See additional eSIM installation instructions below.

You can modify any of the options, except for the Plan you selected. The SIM Card pull-down menu lets you exchange your current SIM to a new eSIM or to a Physical SIM or vice versa. Selecting to order a new physical SIM will display the address section where the SIM will be shipped.

When you order a new physical SIM, once you receive it you will need to connect it to the subscription by selecting Enter New SIM ICCID. The ICCID is printed on the SIM card or its packaging and can be recognized by its first two digits which are always 89.

Unlocking Your Mobile Phone

A locked mobile phone means it will only work with the network of your current mobile provider. This is usually the case when you buy the device from the provider at a discount against a service contract agreement.

Testing if Your Phone Is Locked

To check if your phone is unlocked you can contact your mobile provider or see if you can connect to different mobile operators.

Android: Go to your phone's settings and search for Network Operators, Mobile Networks, or a similar option. Toggle off the Select automatically option (if you can't, your phone is locked). If several networks/operators are displayed and can be selected your phone is unlocked, otherwise it is probably locked.

iOS: Open your phone's settings and select Cellular or Mobile Data. If a Network Selection or a Carrier option exists and you can use them to select different carriers/networks your phone is unlocked, otherwise it is probably locked.

Unlocking Your Phone

To unlock your phone contact and speak with your mobile provider or use the links below for the three major US carriers. In the past, providers were more willing to unlock phones only after the expiration of the service contract. But nowadays, with people frequently upgrading their phones, providers are more flexible about unlocking and some may do it automatically after a set period. An unlocking or a contact termination fee may still apply.

The FCC offers more information about unlocking mobile phones on this page.

AT&T you can submit your unlocking request here.

Verizon Verizon generally unlocks phones 60 days after purchase. Their policy is detailed here.

T-Mobile – Unlocking instructions are available here

Installing the UNI-Mobile SIM

To install and use your new SIM or eSIM make sure Airplane/Flight mode is disabled.

Physical SIM

If you selected a physical SIM subscription, the SIM card will be mailed to you. Refer to your mobile phone's instruction manual about how to eject the SIM card tray and insert your new SIM card.

For a Dual SIM device, you may still need to select and enable the UNI-Mobile SIM, as explained next.

eSIM Installation

You need to have a stable Wi-Fi connection to install an eSIM. You cannot use your existing mobile data connection since it will be disconnected during the installation (but you can use a mobile data connection from another device with a hotspot).

If you use a VPN make sure to turn it off until the installation is complete and while using the eSIM.

After installation, it is a good practice to restart your phone.

Android Installation

  • Go to the Android settings by swiping down from the top to access the Quick Settings and Notification panels and tap the Settings button ().

  • Generally, you will find the relevant option under the Connections or Network & Internet settings, but the easiest way to access it is to search for and select SIMs, SIM manager, SIM cards, or any similar option.

If the search doesn't bring up a match, try navigating to Network & Internet and tap +  next to the Mobile network options

  • Tap Add mobile plan, Add eSIM, Add more, Add carrier, or a similar option.

If the phone prompts with a list of mobile carriers, select Don't see your carrier?, Don’t have a SIM card, Download a SIM instead, or a similar option.

  • Select Scan QR code, Set up an eSIM, +, or a similar option.

  • Use the scanning function to scan the QR code of the UNI-Mobile subscription.

  • (Optional) After the eSIM is installed you can select it to change its name and icon (you may need to tap Edit name and icon or something similar.)

The following figure shows a Samsung device installation. The setting names and menu structure on your phone may differ, but the overall process is similar.

iOS Installation

  • Go to the iOS settings by tapping .

  • Select Cellular or Mobile Data.

  • Tap Add eSIM.

  • Tap Use QR Code.

  • Scan the QR code of the UNI-mobile subscription and select Continue.

  • You can select a label for the new eSIM (Primary, Business, Secondary, etc.) or rename it in the CUSTOM LABEL field.

  • If you have another SIM or eSIM installed you will be asked to select the default SIM for making calls, using iMessage and Facetime, and using Cellular data.

You can change these later, and for calling and messaging you can select a different SIM when dialing a number or composing a message.

Working with Multiple SIMs

If your phone supports multiple SIMs, you will probably use the UNI-Mobile SIM for business communication while keeping your other SIMs for personal or other use.

You can make UNI-Mobile the default choice for calls, messages, and mobile data use or switch to it as needed while making calls or sending messages.

Activating and Selecting a Default SIM

Installing UNI-Mobile as an eSIM or a single SIM will automatically select and enable it. But on a phone with a dual SIM or if you installed another eSIM you need to manually enable UNI-Mobile.

Android SIM Selection

  • Find the SIM manager or SIM cards settings, as described above in the installation process.

  • Toggle on the (e)SIMs you want to activate (you may need to select them first to see the toggling option.)

With a dual-SIM device, you can usually have two physical SIMs active at the same time. However, activating multiple eSIMs depends on your phone model.

  • Find the Preferred or Default SIMs section with options for calls, messages, and mobile data.

    • Tap Calls and select the default SIM to use for calling (or on a dual-SIM phone you might need to tap 1 or 2 to select the physical SIM for the SIM to use in calls or a similar option).

    • Tap Messages and select the default SIM to use for messaging (or on a dual-SIM phone you might need to tap 1 or 2 to select the physical SIM for the SIM to use for messaging or a similar option).

    • Tap Mobile data and select the default SIM to use for data (or on a dual-SIM phone you might need to tap 1 or 2 to select the physical SIM for the Data SIM or a similar option).

Note that on some Android models, the Mobile Data selection applies for both data and messaging and you will not see a separate messaging option!

    • On some phone models, you can also change the default SIM selections from the Quick Setting.

  • You can also enable Auto Data Switching or a similar option (you might have to select More SIM Settings first). When enabled, your device will automatically switch between data connections depending on coverage and availability.

Because the UNI-Mobile SIM comes with unlimited data it is fine to enable this while traveling in covered countries if your other SIMs also have unlimited data coverage in those countries. Otherwise, while traveling, it's better to have this turned off to avoid potential roaming fees!

Grayed-out options mean the mobile plan subscription doesn't support it. For example, if SMS was not enabled when creating a UNI-mobile subscription, you will not be able to select the SIM as a default choice for messaging, but you can still set it as a default choice and use it for calls.

iOS SIM Selection

With iOS you would be prompted to select default eSIM settings during installation and you can also label SIMs as primary, secondary, personal, etc.

  • Go to the iOS settings by tapping .

  • Select Cellular or Mobile Data.

  • Select the SIMs you want active and toggle on its Turn On This Line option.

  • Tap Default Voice Line and select the default SIM to use for calling.

  • Tap Cellular Data and select the default SIM to use for data.

On this screen, you can also toggle on the Allow Cellular Data Switching option.

Switching SIMs during Calling or Messaging

If your device supports multiple active SIMs you can switch between SIMs during calls and messaging, selecting the UNI-Mobile or your other SIMs as needed. The feature works similarly on Android and iOS.

To switch mobile data you will need to go back to the settings screen or have automatic data switching enabled (but be aware that automatic switching could result in roaming fees!)

Switching the Active SIM for Calls

  • Open the phone application on your device and switch to the keypad.

  • The default SIM you selected for calling will appear as a small button on the top or bottom of the screen.

You might have to start dialing before the button is displayed.

  • Tap the button to cycle between available SIMs or to select the desired SIM to use for the call.

  • Finish dialing your number.

On your Recent Calls screen, you will see that calls are marked with the icon of the SIM you selected during each call. Tapping a recent call will dial the number using that same SIM.

Switching the Active SIM for Text Messages

  • Open the messaging application on your device.

  • On Android tap the SIM selection button to cycle between available SIMs or to select the desired SIM to use for the message.

You might have to add a recipient or start writing a new message to display the SIM selection button.

  • On iOS tap the From: field and select the SIM you want to use for the message.

  • Finish writing and sending your message.

Note that on your Messages screen, you can tap the menu, filter button, or search box and select to show messages from all the SIMs or just from a specific one.

One thing to consider is that if you have already messaged a contact, changing the SIM choice may split the conversation and it will appear under two different numbers. It is therefore advisable to keep your SIM choices consistent for each contact.

Configuring Compatible Phones

As mentioned above, the supported phone models will be automatically configured once you install a SIM or an eSIM. For other models, or if your supported phone fails to configure automatically, you need to enable VoLTE and enter APN details manually.

You also need to enable VoLTE manually on iOS prior to iOS 18.

Enabling VoLTE

In a nutshell, VoLTE uses your (e)SIM data connection for phone calls and hence we need to enable it. You can read more about VoLTE  here .

Depending on your phone model, VoLTE may be enabled for each SIM separately or just for the active one.

VoLTE needs to be supported on both devices involved in a call, otherwise a legacy connection is used.

VoLTE and 5G

While VoLTE can certainly operate on 5G networks and 5G is faster than 4G, the radio waves of 5G technology are more limited in range compared to 4G, and with (yet) fewer cell towers supporting 5G frequency, it could be less reliable in some places. Generally speaking, 5G should be fine in urban areas, but consider using 4G in rural regions. Your phone should switch automatically from 5G to 4G if mobile reception is not good. But if you are having call quality issues you can switch manually.

On Android, as shown in the next image, you can manually switch between 5G and 4G by going to your phone's settings and looking for Preferred network type or Network mode (usually found under Mobile networks). On iOS the relevant settings are found on the same screen where you access the VoLTE option, as explained below.

Enablng VoLTE and 4G on Android

  • Access the Android setting by swiping down from the top of your device to access the Quick Settings and Notification panels and tap the Settings button ().

  • SEARCH for Mobile Networks or SIM Cards. These are generally found under the Connections or Network & Internet settings.

  • Depending on the number of active SIMs on your phone you will see one or several toggles to Use VoLTE, VoLTE calls, or a similar option for each SIM. Enable the VoLTE for the relevant SIMs.

Enabling VoLTE and 4G on iOS

  • Go to the iOS settings by tapping .

  • Select Cellular or Mobile Data.

  • Tap Mobile Data and select Mobile Data Options.

  • Tap Voice & Data.

  • Make sure that 4G or LTE is active and toggle on the VoLTE option.

  • Save your changes by going Back.

APN Configuration

The APN (Access Point Name) is a subset of cellular configurations on your phone that provide a gateway to cellular services by identifying the network and the cellular provider associated with your SIMAPN settings are required for establishing a connection with your cellular provider and transmitting, receiving, and correctly routing mobile data, texting services, and security information.

Cellular providers can push the APN configuration to your phone when you insert a SIM card. For this to work they have to receive your phone's ID from the manufacturer. This is the case with the supported phone models mentioned above, but with other manufacturers these may not work and the settings need to be entered manually.

An APN configuration has twenty or more settings but don't be overwhelmed by this as you only need to be concerned with two fields to set up your mobile data connection and four more fields for MMS/SMS and mobile hotspot.

Adding or Editing an APN Configuration on Android

On Android you can edit the UNI-Mobile APN configuration or add a new configuration:

  • Make sure that Airplane/Flight mode is disabled.

  • Access the Android setting by swiping down from the top of your device to access the Quick Settings and Notification panels and tap the Settings button ().

  • Search for and select Access Point Names.

(This is generally found under Connections>Mobile Networks or Network & Internet>Mobile Networks or Sim Cards settings. On a dual-sim phone you need to select one of the SIM cards to see the Access Point Names option).

  • If you have multiple active SIMs, make sure to tap and select the tab for the UNI-Mobile SIM.

  • Select the APN you want to edit or select New APN, tap +, or tap a similar option to create a new APN configuration.

  • Fill in or edit the fields for mobile data, MMS/SMS, or a data hotspot listed below, as needed. You can keep the default values for all services and fields that are not relevant to your account.

  • Select SAVE from the menu or tap the back button to save your edits.

  • Reboot your phone so it applies and connects with the new APN settings.

Modifying an Existing APN on iOS

Newer iOS phones, starting with iOS 15.4 and higher, are supported devices and will be automatically configured with the UNI-mobile APN. However, if you have an older model or if you are having issues with the UNI-Mobile service you can verify and edit the APN settings manually.

Note that on iOS you cannot add a new APNs on top of an existing APN, like it is possible on Android. You can only modify the existing APN or fill in the details for one APN.

Also, on iOS it is possible for cellular providers to lock the APN settings. If you cannot change them, contact your current provider from whom you bought your phone.

  • Make sure Airplane/Flight mode is disabled.

  • Go to the iOS settings by tapping .

  • Select Cellular, Mobile, or Mobile Data.

  • If you have multiple active SIMs, select the UNI-Mobile SIM (remember that it may appear with a "Secondary" or another label.)

  • Scroll down and select Mobile Data Network or Cellular Data Network (if you don't see these you may need to select Mobile Data Options or Cellular Data Options first.)

  • You can now edit the APN settings. Fill in the fields for mobile data, MMS/SMS, or a data hotspot listed below, as needed.

You can keep the default values for all other fields.

  • Save your changes by going Back.

  • Reboot your phone so it applies and connects with the new APN settings.

UNI-Mobile APN Settings

For mobile data fill in the following fields:

  • Name: globaldata

  • APN: globaldata

For SMS/MMS fill in the following fields:

  • Multimedia message proxy (MMS proxy): 37.18.129.98

  • Multimedia message proxy (MMS Port): 8008

If you don't see a Port field, just include the port in the proxy field like this – 37.18.129.98:8008.

  • MMSC: http://mms.mobileuc.global/

To use your phone as a mobile hotspot:

  • On Android find the APN Type field. With Android 14 and higher enter tethering. With Android 13 and lower enter to DUN.

  • On iOS find the PERSONAL HOTSPOT settings and enter globaldata. You can enter a username and password to secure the hotspot.

Trouble Shooting

Testing Signal Strength

Before assuming there is a problem with the UNI-Mobile service or a phone configuration, you should check that there is actually an acceptable cellular reception. Slow internet and dropped calls are possible signs of bad cellular reception.

Your phone's reception bars, displayed for each active SIM, show the signal strength from the nearest cell tower. However, they only provide a general measurement and do not include all the factors that could affect cell reception.

For more accurate measurements you can download a reputable signal strength measurement app. A network speed test tool can also help you estimate the strength and quality of the cellular signal (just make sure that the correct mobile data settings are applied to the relevant SIM and that Wi-Fi is switched off.)

You can also use your phone's built-in signal testing tools by doing the following:

  • Make sure the Wi-Fi connection is turned off.

  • On iOS:

    • Open the phone app and dial *3001#12345#* to open the Field Test Mode.

    • There should be different sections for 5G and LTE.

    • Signal strength is indicated in the RSRP ( Reference Signal Received Power) field. If you see two RSRP fields then RSRP0 is the current tower you are connected to while RSRP1 is the nearest backup tower.

    • Depending on your iOS version this field can be found by

Tapping RsrpRsrqSinr, Reach Attempt, or Nr Reach Attempt.

Or by tapping the menu and selecting Cell Info or Serving Cell Meas.

  • On Android:

    • Go to the phone's settings and search for and select SIM card status (this is usually found under About Phone and Status Information or Network.)

    • Find the Signal Strength field.

  • Signal strength is measured in negative dBm units. Anything over -99 dBm indicates acceptable cell reception and above -80 is good reception. Values between -100 and -120 indicate poor reception. Anything lower indicates very poor or no reception at all.

If your cellular reception is -110 or below you should probably move to somewhere with better cellular coverage before trying further troubleshooting.

Basic Troubleshooting

Here are some basic troubleshooting steps you should try first:

  • For eSIM, remember to always keep your VPN off (using a VPN with a physical SIM is fine if you don't mind that it somewhat slows down your mobile data connection.)

  • Enable and disable Airplane/Flight mode to refresh your connection with the cellular network. If this doesn't help, reboot your phone.

  • Make sure your Android or iOS system is up to date and download and install the latest OS updates if available.

  • If using a physical UNI-Mobile SIM, try turning off your phone and removing the SIM card. Clean the card with a soft cloth to remove any dust. Reinsert the card and make sure it is properly seated.

If you have a dual SIM phone try removing the other SIM and inserting the UNI-Mobile SIM in its place.

Selecting the Correct Network Operator

The UNI-Mobile global service works with partner cellular operators (carriers) for each covered country or region and your phone should automatically select the correct operator when you install the SIM card. However, it is certainly possible the phone will select or switch to a wrong operator, especially while traveling, which will prevent the service from functioning properly.

You can solve this by manually selecting a network operator:

On Android:

  • Go to your phone's settings and search for and select Network Operators, Mobile Networks, or a similar option.

  • Toggle off the Select automatically option.

  • Select the correct operator from the tables below.

On iOS:

  • Open your phone's settings and select Cellular or Mobile Data.

  • Open the Network Selection or Carrier option.

  • Toggle off the Automatic option.

  • Select the correct carrier from the tables below.

Resetting the APN Registration

Each of your SIM cards should have a different APN configuration that can be reset separately. We still recommend you capture or note down the APN configurations for all of your SIMs before performing a reset just in case you need to reconfigure them.

  • Follow the APN configuration instructions above to access the APN settings.

  • On iOS, select the SIM for UNI-mobile (if you have multiple active SIMs).

Go to the Cellular Data Network or Mobile Data Network where you will see the APN configuration, tap Reset Settings, and select Reset when prompted to approve your choice.

  • On Android, make sure you are on the Access Point Names screen and have selected the correct SIM tab for UNI-Mobile.

Tap the menu button, select Reset to default, and select Reset when prompted to approve your choice.

  • Restart your phone. On supported devices, the configuration will be reapplied automatically, but on other models you may have to manually reenter it.

Deleting Redundant APN Configurations (Android)

(On iOS you do not need to be concerned with redundant APN configurations since you cannot add new APNs but only modify the existing one. If you think there is an APN issue with the UNI-Mobile service on your iPhone, just reset the APN configuration.)

When you install the UNI-Mobile SIM your phone (even if not a supported model) may automatically configure it with potentially redundant APN settings from the local carrier. We suggest that you initially keep these and just add a new UNI-Mobile configuration. But if after resetting the UNI-Mobile APN you are still having issues you can go ahead and delete these.

To delete an APN configuration tap it to open it. If you have not already done so, you should capture or note down the APN settings, just in case. Select Delete APN from the menu and confirm the deletion.

Reinstalling the eSIM

Reinstalling the UNI-Mobile eSIM, especially if you have traveled to a different region or country, could establish the correct connection settings. To reinstall the eSIM make sure you have access to a stable Wi-Fi connection and the eSIM's QR code.

To reinstall the eSIM you first need to remove it:

  • On Android:

    • Open your phone's settings and search for and select SIMs, SIM manager, SIM cards, or any similar option.

(These are generally found under the Connections or Network & Internet settings.)

    • Tap the UNI-Mobie eSIM and select Remove.

    • At the prompt confirm the removal.

    • Reinstall the eSIM using its QR code (see instructions above.)

  • On iOS:
    • Open your phone's settings and select Cellular or Mobile Data.

    • Select the UNI-Mobile plan or SIM card (it may be labeled as Primary, Secondary, or any other name you assigned to it during installation.)

    • Select the Remove or Delete button and confirm the removal.

    • Reinstall the eSIM using the QR code (see instructions above.)

Resetting Network Settings

If resetting the APN and removing redundant APN configurations doesn't help you can consider a full network reset.

On some devices you are able to reset only the mobile network, but otherwise be aware that on most devices this will reset all Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, VPN, and APN settings including their passwords and all configurations. You will need to manually reconnect and reconfigure these connections, hence you should note down or capture all their passwords, details, and preferences.

  • On Android:

    • Go to your phone's settings and search for and for Reset.

From the search results, select Reset Network Settings or Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile networks, and Bluetooth.

(If you prefer to navigate rather than searching, these options are usually found under Connections, System>Reset, or General Managment>Reset.)

    • On some phones you will see an option to only Reset mobile networks and you will also be able to select the SIM card for which to reset the network. Try this first. If it doesn't help you can also try resetting Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

    • Make sure not to select any other reset option like "Reset all settings" or "Factory data reset"!!!

    • Select Reset Settings to proceed.

  • On iOS:

    • Open your phone's settings and select General.

    • Select Reset.

(On the later iOS versions you will need to first select Transfer or Reset iPhone).

    • Select Reset Network Settings.

    • If prompted, enter your phone's passcode or just confirm the reset.
